The federal government has allocated $12 million to the states of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas to train workers for jobs critical to the economic recovery of the Gulf region. Funding will be used for short-term training that provides a quick return to employment, as well as career paths for participating individuals using community college programs. These training programs must lead to industry-recognized credentials, certifications, licenses and degrees in the following industries: construction, energy, health care, transportation and the safety-security sector. The Gulf Rebuild: Education, Advancement and Training (GREAT) campaign seeks to address the critical workforce shortages facing the Gulf Coast following the 2005 hurricanes. You can check out the "I'm Great" website, www.imgreat.org, covering what is already going in Louisiana and Mississippi . Plans are underway to begin training in the Houston area soon. Go to the Houston Business Roundtable's site to check out the progress and plans at http://www.houbrt.com/2005/.
