The Mundy Companies Awarded "Industry of the Year" Print E-mail
Written by Robbie Adair
Mundy Company awarded "Industry of the Year" by the Bay Shore ChamberOn October 5th at the La Porte Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce’s awards banquet, The Mundy Companies will officially become the organization’s "Industry of the Year," making them the first contractor to ever be honored with this award. The company can proudly boast a long history of success in many areas and a business growth of thirty percent in the last three years. Meeting all the criteria for winning this award goes hand-in-hand with the company’s growth and outstanding reputation. When asked about the award in an interview, David Mundy replied, “No false modesty – our workers are doing a good job.”

In 1955, A.J. Mundy established a company on a creed that emphasized long-term relationships with clients and rewarding and keeping good employees. He said: "Ours is a service organization. Our Success depends not on the claims we make but on our continuing ability to deliver proven performance, always related to the economic BENEFIT of our customers, and at the same time provide secure and rewarding work opportunities to all our employees."

La Porte - Bay Shore Chamber names Mundy Companies "Industry of the Year"

From L to R: Don Unroe-Mundy, Russell Pitts-Mundy, Shane Burden-Mundy, Lou Anne Cooper-Sunoco Chemical, Alton Porter-Mayor of La Porte, Colleen Hicks-La Porte chamber of commerce, David Mundy-Mundy, Tanya Tacy-La Porte chamber of commerce, Jeff Bearden-La Porte Salute Co-Chairman, Bayou City Industries, Cari Scaff-Mundy, Kelly Haws-Mundy, Bobby Massengale-Mundy

Today, The Mundy Companies is owned and operated by David Mundy and Shane Burden, who maintain the same qualities and values as A.J. Mundy with thousands of Mundy employees performing maintenance functions for client companies including instrumentation, insulation, material expediting, management of specialty subs, piping, welding, mechanical equipment maintenance, training and turnarounds, planning and execution. As David Mundy puts it, “The tools are different, but the idea is fundamentally the same.” The idea can be summed up in three words: Safety, Quality, Productivity.

The company values employees as the key to success in all three areas. By utilizing an Employee Database system which lists an individual’s job history, unique skills, training history, certifications, drug screening results, and a “Report Card” system which tracks each employee’s performance and attitude, the company can match the client’s industrial needs with employees that offer the skills and attitude necessary to get the job done right. By acquiring and retaining the best quality of employees, the company, with twelve million hours worked in 2005, achieved a safety record with an OSHA rate of 0.96. Further, Mundy clients save on labor costs with Mundy through the involvement of the workers - who are challenged by David and Shane to seek out and deliver Continuous Improvement ideas for the plants where they work. In 2005, more than $10,000,000 in customer’s savings were delivered by Mundy workers.

When discussing how these employees, aside from their outstanding work, were instrumental in the company’s Industry of the Year award, Shane Burden said that many of their employees live in La Porte where they work and “are highly active in the local community” working with volunteer and community organizations that make the area a better place to live.

The Mundy Companies take the long term view with both clients and employees which they see as fundamental to the continuing success of the company. The company has mostly long term contracts, with clients that have thirty to thirty-five years continuous work. They are also able to maintain long term employees through fair treatment, open communications, recognition, and advancement opportunities. As a matter-of-fact, the last four Operations Vice Presidents started their careers with the company in entry-level positions.

Another criteria that the company meets is that they “buy local,” using area vendors and suppliers to meet their own company’s needs. This action, of course, helps all businesses in the area to grow. Since www.houstonmanufacturers.com is all about “buying local,” The Mundy Company is certainly the kind of company that we like to see win such awards.

Before the Awards Banquet on October 5th, the Chamber will hold their golf tournament on October the 4th. For more information on the golf tournament, contact the La Porte Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce.
