An Environmentally-Conscious Manufacturer Print E-mail
Written by Andreana Binder
Texas Industries, Inc. The Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC) reports that Texas manufacturers, from 1995 through 1997, led all states in reducing the release and disposal of toxic chemicals reported to the federal Toxics Release Inventory. Texas’ total releases fell by 43 million pounds or 14 percent over that period and ranked first for long-term reductions from 1988 through 1997, cutting releases and disposal by 143 million pounds, or 44 percent. TNRCC believes this reduction is particularly noteworthy because it coincided with a booming state economy, including a 28 percent jump in manufacturing activity.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), precursors of ozone, measured as ozone exceedance days have fallen about 40 percent in the Houston metropolitan even as the population grew by 50 percent, largely through reductions in man-made VOCs, since 1980. These numbers are a clear indication that most of our manufacturers are making great effort to protect our environment and our health. One such manufacture is Texas Industries, Inc.

Texas Industries, Inc. is also a major producer for California. Ralph B. Rogers founded Texas Industries, Inc. in 1951, as a small aggregate plant in Eastland, Texas. In 1959, Rogers built the first TXI cement plant in Midlothian, Texas. TXI operates in six states in the U.S. and prevails as the leading manufacturer of bagged cement and concrete products in the Southwest. Cement that saves trees seems like a contradiction in terms. However, Texas Industries, Inc., the largest producer of cement in Texas, strives to manufacturer products safe for the environment.

Cemstar (patented by TXI) is a unique, cement-making process by significantly reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the cement-making kiln process. This patented formula is now used by cement processing plants nation-wide. Texas Industries, Inc. kilns use the most advanced air pollution control systems in the United States.

TXI also developed and patented an alternative to landfill and the long-term ownership responsibilities of landfill contents. This new technology is used to manage and reuse non-hazardous refinery waste products, such as CIWA dirt, and fluid cracking catalyst (FCC). Non-hazardous refinery byproducts are converted into reusable materials for the production of cement and other aggregates.

Energy services at TXI pay special attention to the environment. In 1999 the Environmental Protection Agency awarded Texas Industries, Inc. with the prestigious U.S. EPA Climate Protection Award. TXI Energy Services find ways to recycle items in its manufacturing process, such as recycled tires, recycled concrete, and recycled waste fuels and water. Petrochemical Support Services research is conducted by universities to understand how refinery byproducts can be reclaimed to help the environment.

At TXI, product options (even cement color options) are varied, as certain engineering and construction projects require cement with specific physical and chemical qualities. In addition to cement, concrete, and aggregate, TXI manufactures many other building products. Also a major supplier of sand, gravel, expanded shale and clay products, TXI manufacturers Diamond Pro, used for baseball field grounds keeping. Tru Gro is an easy solution to permanently treat heavy clay in your yard or grounds. Other products include lightweight oil well cement, Pressur-Seal drilling fluid additive, cementing made safe and convenient at home.
