 We all theoretically support the idea of local businesses with employees circulating money in our community, but often forget a business’s survival depends on our patronage. Houston businesses not only provide paychecks that pump money back into the local economy, but they also employ a wide array of supporting services. They hire architects, designers, cabinet shops, sign makers and contractors for construction and help grow business for local accountants, insurance brokers, computer consultants, attorneys, advertising agencies and others. The goal of HoustonManufacturers.com is to bring local manufacturers together with Houston service providers and suppliers, as well as other potential clients.
Small manufacturers often rely on local retailers to give their new products a chance, and those retailers, even national chains and certainly those locally owned, are usually free to take some chances with the goods of a Houston manufacturer. Then as consumers, we need to buy those locally made products when they fit our need equally well as a similar product made outside the greater Houston area. While I was researching for this site, I discovered that Houston manufactured a large array of products that I was never aware of, such as mattresses to name one. Now that I am aware of this, the next time I buy a mattress I intend to buy one manufactured in Houston. If we all did this, imagine how many new Houston jobs would be created in the mattress manufacturing industry, providing payroll money that could then be spent at other businesses such as mine or yours.
Local business owners with their own capital invested have a natural interest in the long-term health of the community. In the larger picture, national and international companies with local operations, hopefully, recognize the impact their locally spent dollars have on the community where they operate. And each time we, as consumers, spend business or personal money, we should consider how those dollars will impact Houston. |
